Bob
Thank you for the nice tribute to my Father Harry Preciado. I and my family viewed it and were quite touched at the words you spoke about my Dad and my Mom. We laid him to rest yesterday and what was most special, it was with full Military Honors with the folding of the U.S. Flag and a rifle salute.
What was also special was representaion from my office of the U.S. Border Patrol and the precenese of uniformed agents in support of my loss.
He will be greatly missed by all. I wish to extend my a most sincere thank you for the friedship you exteneded to both of them and also to the rest of the desert community who eccepted them into their close knit circle of friends.

SUBJECT: My Desert

Bob, thought you might enjoy this as much as I did:

MORNIN' ON THE DESERT

(Found written on the door of an old cabin on the desert)
Mornin' on the desert, and the wind is blowing free. And it's ours, jest for breathin', so let's fill up, you and me.
No more stuffy cities, where you have to pay to breathe, Where the helpless human creatures move and throng and strive and seethe.
Mornin' on the desert, and the air is like a wine, And it seems like all creation has been made for me and mine. No house to stop my vision, save a neighbor's miles away, And the little 'dobe shanty that belongs o me and May.
Lonesome? Not a minute! Why, I've got these mountains here, That was put here just to please me, with their blush and frown and cheer. They're waitin' when the summer sun gets too sizzlin' hot, An' we just go campin' in 'em with a pan and coffee pot.
Mornin' on the desert - I can smell the sagebrush smoke, I hate to see it burnin', but the land must sure be broke. Ain't is jest a pity that wherever man may live, He tears up much that's beautiful that the good God has to give?
"Sagebrush ain't so pretty?" Well, all eyes don't see the same. Have you ever saw the moonlight turn it to a silvery flame? An' that grease wood thicket yonder- Well, it smells jest awful sweet, When the night wind has been shakin' it - for its smell is hard to beat.
Lonesome? Well, I guess not! I've been lonesome in a town. But I sure do love the desert with its stretches wide and brown. All day through the sagebrush here the wind is blowin' free, An' it's ours jest for the breathin' so let's fill up, you and me.

NOTE: The author of "Mornin' in the Desert" is unknown, though the poem is sometimes attributed to John R. Nielson. It is said to have been found written on the door of an old cabin in the desert.    //bob
UPDATE: I have recieved an email about the Poem: "As to this poem. I have been doing research. It could have been my grandfather, John R. Nielson Jr., but likely not. The more likely person to be the author is, Katherine Fall Pettey. There is some argument as to which is the earlier source.

Hi Bob..........We have been trying to keep up to date with the fire down your way. Just how close is it to where you live? From what I hear because of the wind problem and not really enough fire fighters, containment will take awhile. Stay safe!! (did you take the pictures that you included in your Tues. email)? SUBJECT:Hello and just found your website again!
Bob,
Hello to all my old friends at CCM! I just read your 01/07/2006 article and am shocked and saddened to learn about my mentor. Between Kaye and Mary Lou Kernop, the two of them taught me everything I know about crafting and quilting and sewing. I don't have any phone numbers any more so if you would please tell Patrick for me that I am sorry I wasn't there for him and Kaye and that I think about all of you very often. Then after reading that I decided to check the archives to see what all you have been doing and what else has happened since I left. Oh my goodness my say mood went into a real funk! So many of the lovely ladies that lived up there are now gone. My condolences to all of the families who lost loved ones.
I will try to get my caregiver to bring me up there one day. You see I haven't been well since Dec of 2004. I went into the hospital with Kidney Renal Failure and am now on dialysis 3 times a week. Then just about 2 months ago now I began having seizures and they don't know what causes them.
So now I will check the site every week to see what is happening up there with my friends. That way I won't miss much and have to apologize for being late or unaware of anything anymore.

SUBJECT: Thank You
Hi Bob,
I am Michelle, Sam's sister-inlaw who you will probably tell stories about how many trojans and viruses you found on her PC. I want to thank you for cleaning up my PC and doing, (from what Sam said) a complete overhaul on my system. I guess I am more ignorant than I thought I was on PC use or, I guess I am finding out just how much the PC LAN and Network people at my place of employment do for our company to keep crap off our systems.
I am most appreciative of the time spent getting me "up and running" once again. I don't understand how I did this to my PC as most of the email I open here shows a "no virus found" or "not a virus threat". I guess I just need more instruction in this area.
Again I thank you and please let me know what kind of baked goodies you enjoy.
Happy New Year and God Bless
Michelle N.

SUBJECT: Sorry to hear about your friend passing recently
FROM: Mike Long
Bob, Sorry to hear about your friend passing recently. You never can tell how life is going to go, or how or when it will end. My sympathy is with you and your friends family. I didn't respond right away due to our families own loss. Last week I got a call from my sister who is recovering from a Broken shoulder, with rather upsetting news. Our little dog Reggy, had been "greeting" the mail man as he normally does, jumping up at the front door when he caught the edge of the coffee table on the way down. That spun him around and he hit the floor head first, killing him instantly. My sister said he cried out briefly and then he was gone. That little guy bit me in every place you could imagine but I still loved him. Mom was devastated and will probably be so for some time. I will miss that little guy for a long time. And I am glad he was part of our life. Be well my friend, Michael

I am sure he also knew what a wonderful friend you were to him also. I enjoyed the episode of the "magic screwdriver"----I'll bet you have many stories of the great times and fun both of you had!         The kids we had @the Center @ Tues nite were; Devin,Ryan, Sarah, Dennis, & Lydia. They had fun playing w/ blackboard, pool, video games, and toys from M&S Treasure Room. They CLEANED up their own mess (unlike some adults!) and put away the stuff they played with. Polite too, on the way out they thanked all the people there. Gonna do it again Tues nite. PS: We're lookin' for donations of a VCR (doesn't have to play tapes, just need the plug ins), and a color TV for Video games.

Dear bob, I would like to thank the wonderful neighbors John and Connie King who lived next door to the Preciados as they were not mentioned in your column. they were there any and everytime the Preciados were unable to do something, and never complained as they have family and daily tasks of their own. They LOVED the Preciados very much and I myself know how much they miss them. I just wanted to let you know that there were others in this community that lent a helping hand in time of need. HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY and keep up the good work.

Hello All, I am new to the area and am not sure I am Actually on Copper Mountain Mesa … I live about 4-5 miles east of the Community Center on Winters Road. I found your website and would like to start getting the Newsletter. My girlfriend and I have moved into my grandparents Homestead and are beginning to get it back in shape after years of neglect. We hope to have it up to standard soon, though it is a slow process. We hope to attend Bingo and other community center events after the start of the New Year.
Happy Holidays, Dan and Aleda
